Nespresso’s Hawaii Kona review: capsule and coffee cup

>> Limited Edition 2018

Hawaii Kona is a 2018 Limited Edition Special Reserve espresso made from 100% Arabica beans from a Mauna Loa estate located in Kailua-Kona on Big Island, Hawaii.

HAWAII KONA CAPSULE REVIEW

Following Galápagos Santa Cruz, Nespresso is releasing another rare limited edition, this time coming from the volcanic mountains of Big Island, Hawaii.

While Kona coffee is available on the mainland at some grocery stores such as Trader Joe’s, if you’ve been to Kona and are a coffee fan, you probably noticed that there are quite a few brands, some lacking flavor and authenticity. Coming at the stiff price of $20 per box, this special reserve is only available in stores, Nespresso emphasizing its exceptional rarity and flavor.

Is it really worth the hype? Well, Hawaii Kona certainly has a rich body and a strong distinctive flavor going for it, think roasted nuts with a spicy red fruit hint. It leaves you with a lasting smoky and salty aftertaste and feels surprisingly dark despite its moderate intensity. Just like with Galápagos Santa Cruz, the question is whether this one is worth shelling out $20 for a single box and, this time, the answer is yes, Hawaii Kona being a superior capsule which delivers a great coffee experience.

COFFEE PAIRING

  • Activities: Because it’s so exclusive, it’s another one you should keep for special occasions.
  • Music: I was gonna suggest Elvis Presley’s Hawaiian tunes but the truth is that I’ve been listening to the rare collaboration of Rock god Iggy Pop with electronic act Underworld which is called Teatime Dub Encounters – close enough from coffee time – and matches the overall metallic silver theme of this coffee packaging.
  • Food: So scarce that you should enjoy your espresso cup without any food to avoid spoiling its flavor.

PACKAGING

Nespresso’s Hawaii Kona comes in a metallic silver rectangle box which opens in the middle.

It includes 10 silver capsules.
